Edmonton Arena District Development

The new Edmonton Arena District Development will re-locate the home of the Oilers NHL hockey team to the heart of downtown Edmonton and serves as a catalyst for creating new linkages and opportunities in the city’s core. Within the master plan of this major revitalization project, a number of new facilities and amenities will be developed including new retail and commercial space, two 33-storey residential towers, a Fairmont hotel, significant public realm, and several other indoor and outdoor facilities to serve the greater Edmonton population.

One of the key concerns of the master plan has been to ensure the new development integrates and improves the existing downtown offer. The site, located across a key axis in the City’s core, is designed to encourage and enhance walkability; it is easily accessible by LRT and the various elements of the development are connected by a +15. Careful consideration has been given to vistas from all vantage points, and the residential and hotel towers have been orientated in order to maximize the sunlight to the central plaza. Given Edmonton’s extreme climate, various opportunities have been investigated for the public programming in the plaza throughout the year. This along with a full complement of amenities in the three-storey podiums of the surrounding buildings will reinvigorate Edmonton’s downtown.
